Trumpeter Byron Stripling and saxophonist Chris Vadala team up with the SSO, to perform classics jazz hits from Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Dave Brubeck and other 20th century greats.  Melodies include One O’Clock Jump, A Night in Tunisia, Satin Doll and Take Five.

This concert is part of the 2009-2010 Dryden Mutual Cortland Series.

SYRACUSE, NY – The Syracuse Symphony Orchestra (SSO) presents an exciting evening of jazz standards, featuring the talents of Michael Butterman, conductor; Byron Stripling, trumpet; Chris Vadala, saxophone; and Dave Mancini, drums. Crowd pleasing favorites include a Louis Armstrong Tribute, Count Basie’s classic “One O’Clock Jump,” Cab Calloway’s “Minnie the Moocher,” “Take Five” by Paul Desmond, and Dizzy Gillespie’s seminal classic “A Night in Tunisia.” Jazz aficionados will enjoy the classic renditions of their favorite jazz tunes and the phenomenal musicianship of these three incredible showmen backed by the SSO’s world-class orchestral musicians.

The concert is Wednesday, January 13th at Cortland High School, 8:00 p.m. This Cortland Series concert is generously sponsored by First Niagara and the entire SSO season is sponsored by RBC Wealth Management.

Michael Butterman

Michael Butterman is in his fourth season as Music Director of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, and is in his 10th season as Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. This season, he assumed the additional post of Resident Conductor of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra.

Butterman first gained international attention as a diploma laureate in the Prokofiev International Conducting Competition and as a finalist in the Besançon International Conducting Competition. As the 1999 recipient of the Seiji Ozawa Fellowship, he studied at Tanglewood with Robert Spano, Jorma Panula, and Mr. Ozawa. In 1997, he was sponsored by UNESCO to lead the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Moldova in a concert by great American masters.

Butterman’s work has been featured in five nationwide broadcasts on public radio’s “Performance Today,” and can be heard on two CDs recorded for the Newport Classics label.

Byron Stripling, trumpet

Since his Carnegie Hall debut, Byron Stripling has become a pops orchestra favorite across the country. He has been a featured soloist at the Hollywood Bowl and performs at jazz festivals throughout the world.

His trumpet playing has been featured on the Grammy Awards, television theme songs for “20/20” and CNN, and movie soundtracks. He has also made a career out of his strikingly true-to-life impersonation of Louis Armstrong. Stripling was selected, following a worldwide search, to star in the lead role of Louis Armstrong in the Broadway-bound musical, Satchmo.

He has performed with the Count Basie Orchestra and recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Dave Brubeck, Clark Terry, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band.

He attended the Eastman School of Music and the Interlochen Arts Academy and is currently the artistic director and conductor of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra.

Chris Vadala, saxophone

Chris Vadala has appeared on more than 100 recordings and innumerable jingle sessions, film and television scores. He currently holds the position of the Director of Jazz Studies and teaches saxophone at the University of Maryland. He earned his Performer’s Certificate in saxophone and a B.M. in Music Education from the Eastman School of Music; received an M.A. in clarinet from Connecticut College and pursued postgraduate study in woodwinds at Eatsman.

He has performed and recorded with the Chuck Mangione Quartet performing on five gold and two platinum albums. He has also been involved in productions that have won two Grammys, one Emmy and one Golden Globe Award. He has performed and/or recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, B.B. King, Chick Corea, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Placido Domingo, Sarah Vaughan, Herbie Hancock, Ray Charles, Doc Severinsen and many others.

He is also a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz study grant and publishes saxophone literature, method books and original compositions.

Dave Mancini, drums

Dave Mancini is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music where he was awarded a Performer’s Certificate. He was a member of the percussion section with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra from 1971-1981 and then toured and recorded with Maynard Ferguson. He has also appeared with artists such as Chuck Mangione, Rosemary Clooney, Joe Williams, Maureen McGovern, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis and Bob Hope. He is an artist/clinician for Avedis Zildjian Cymbal Company, Yamaha Drums, and Vic Firth, Inc.

Mancini is also Founder and President of We Love Kids Inc., an outreach program for kids. He and Leon “Rick” Flowers present drumming workshops to encourage young people to explore their creative talents as an alternative to drugs, gangs and violence.

During its 39-week season, the 80-member Syracuse Symphony Orchestra performs for more than 237,000 audience members through 213 full-orchestra and ensemble concerts in 17 counties throughout New York State. Founded in 1961, the Syracuse Symphony, led by a conducting staff of international caliber, has performed five concerts at Carnegie Hall, most recently on April 5, 2003, and was presented with the NYS Governor's Arts Award in 1999.
